Toyota Supra 2024: A Real Sports Car

I have nothing against versatility and vehicles that touch multiple segments at once. It's simply amazing that you can get an SUV capable of towing a trailer, dusting off performance models on the drag strip while carrying up to 7 passengers. However, this phenomenon has had the effect of eliminating the majority of models with a specific purpose. Fortunately, there is the Toyota Supra, a two-door hardtop car with a powerful front engine. It is undoubtedly one of the few true sports cars still available today.

The fifth-generation Toyota Supra has been on the market for a few years now. However, that doesn't stop the Japanese manufacturer from offering something new every year. In fact, the model will celebrate its 45th anniversary in 2024, and Toyota has decided to mark the occasion with a special GR 45th-anniversary edition. This version stands out from other model variants with its unique Plasma Orange paint, matte black wheels, and black GR brake calipers. There are also several other black elements on the car, including the adjustable rear spoiler. The only downside is that this new special edition will only be available in 45 units for Canada.

Range and Prices

The Toyota Supra range is essentially divided into two main categories. First, there's the 2.0 model equipped with a 4-cylinder engine. This version has a starting price of $60,891.50. Next is the 3.0 version, with a starting price of $72,381.50. To get the 45th-anniversary edition, you'll need to add $7,720.

Category and Competition

The Toyota Supra operates between the luxury car and mainstream car categories. In fact, I believe this is the case for the majority of sports cars in the same class, which is what makes the segment so interesting. Each model has its strengths and weaknesses, and the Toyota Supra certainly has some strong points.

Rivals: Audi TT, BMW Z4, Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang, Nissan Z, Porsche 718 Cayman/Boxster.

Design and Technologies

Toyota took some bold risks with the Supra, and I must say it's refreshing to see a car that stands out from the rest. The Supra is very eye-catching and doesn't look like any other car currently available on the market. It features highly pronounced and aggressive shapes, making it a head-turner.

Its interior is clearly that of the BMW Z4 with some modifications. To be honest with you, I don't necessarily see this as a bad thing. The Supra offers a superior finish and finishing options that simply aren't found in other models from the brand.

Performance

One of the first questions we asked Toyota when they announced the return of the Supra to the market was whether a manual transmission would ever be available. At that time, we were told it wouldn't be. Several aftermarket tuners started installing manual transmissions on the Supra afterward, and that's when the Japanese manufacturer realized they had missed the mark. Well, that's not exactly what was said, but it's clear that someone at Toyota realized the Supra should also have a manual gearbox. Since last year, it's a feature that you can find on the Japanese manufacturer's sports car, which certainly delights the model's enthusiasts.

In its base version, the 2024 Toyota Supra is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. This engine delivers 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, which is already quite impressive. It's paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission as standard. Unfortunately, a manual transmission is not available as an option here. This more accessible engine offers excellent fuel efficiency with an average of 9.3 L/100km in the city and 7.2 L/100km on the highway.

To unlock the full potential of the Toyota Supra, you need to go for the second engine option. It's a 3.0-liter inline-6 turbocharged engine that produces 382 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque. This same engine can be found under the hood of the 45th-anniversary special edition. Here, you have two transmission options. There's the same 8-speed automatic gearbox found in the base version. You can also opt for the 6-speed manual transmission at no extra cost.

Weak Points

Purists still shun this car because of its proximity to the BMW Z4. The 4-cylinder engine is best avoided unless you're really not a performance enthusiast. There's no convertible or Targa version.

Strengths

This car turns heads wherever it goes. The Supra also offers a very sophisticated driving experience, precisely because of its connection to the Z4. The manual transmission makes it one of the most desirable sports cars on the market, without a doubt.

Signature Element

Both simple and refined, the Toyota Supra delivers a genuine driving pleasure. It's a true sports car, there's no doubt about it.

Final Word

The Toyota Supra is one of the most iconic sports cars on the market. Of course, everyone refers to the fourth generation when discussing the model. However, the fifth generation of the Supra has everything to offer and is certainly a future classic.
