Toyota has long been known as a leader in automotive safety and the recently released IIHS Safety Picks for 2016 confirm that nothing has changed. Here we will take a brief look at who the IIHS is as well as which Toyotas received top ratings from the IIHS this year.
Who is the IIHS?
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is considered one of the automotive industry’s most respected bodies when it comes to measuring vehicle safety. Founded back in 1959, this US-based non-profit organisation conducts a wide variety of rigorous tests on the latest vehicles and every year releases a list highlighting the safest options in each class. The following four Toyotas were recently recognised for their exceptional safety performance.
2016 Toyota Camry – Top Safety Pick +
The Camry isn’t just one of the world’s most popular cars, it is also one of the safest, with the 2016 Camry recently named a Top Safety Pick in the ‘Midsize moderately priced cars’ category. The Camry’s many safety features include rollover sensors, electronic stability control and daytime running lights as well as a comprehensive suite of strategically positioned air bags and this is the fifth year running that the Camry has been named an IIHS Safety Pick.
2016 Toyota Prius v – Top Safety Pick +
It seems that there is nothing that the Prius can’t do, because apart from its industry leading durability and efficiency it has now also received the highest rating for safety from the IIHS. The Prius received above average marks for everything from injury prevention measures to its structure and safety cage, while its optional Pre-collision System and Advanced Technology Package were highlighted as particularly impressive. This is the second year in a row that the Prius has been named an IIHS Safety Pick in the ‘Midsize moderately priced cars’ category.
2016 Toyota Avalon – Top Safety Pick +
The Toyota Avalon was the only ‘Large family car’ to be named an IIHS Safety Pick in 2016, continuing to show that it is one of the most impressive vehicles in its class. Everything from its side and roof strength to its injury protection measures were highly rated and when optional safety features were considered the Avalon received an overall safety rating of ‘Superior’ for front crash prevention. This is the seventh time in the last eight years that the Avalon has been named an IIHS Safety Pick.
2016 Toyota RAV4 – Top Safety Pick +
In the ‘Small SUV’ category the RAV4 has been turning heads for all the right reasons, recently being named an IIHS Safety Pick for the third time in the past four years. The RAV4’s side and roof strength received particularly high ratings, while their head restraints, seats and front crash prevention system passed every test with flying colours. In fact, when optional upgrades were factored in the RAV4 was rated ‘Superior’ for front crash prevention.
